About Tulasi Maadam

The Tulasi (Holy Basil) plant holds immense spiritual significance in Hindu tradition. Every part of the Tulasi — from its leaves and stem to the soil and stone pot in which it is planted — is considered sacred and holy.

Spiritual Importance

In the Srimad Bhagavatam (Canto 4, Chapter 15, Verse 19), it is beautifully described:

“Although flowering plants like mandāra, kunda, kurabaka, utpala, campaka, arṇa, punnāga, nāgakeśara, bakula, lily, and pārijāta are full of transcendental fragrance, they are still conscious of the austerities performed by Tulasī. For Tulasī is given special preference by the Lord, who garlands Himself with tulasī leaves.”

This verse highlights how even the most fragrant flowers bow to the spiritual merit of Tulasi, as Lord Vishnu Himself wears her leaves as garlands.

Spiritual Practices

  • Tulasi wood, if obtained from a naturally dead plant, is ground into a paste and applied on the body during Vishnu worship. This act is said to equal:
    • Thousands of regular pujas
    • Donating lakhs of cows (Godan)
  • Tulasi water is often given to the dying to help elevate their soul on the path to liberation.

Which Tulsi is Best for Worship?

Among the varieties of Tulasi, the Shyama Tulsi (also known as Krishna Tulsi) is considered the most sacred.

  • Appearance: Dark green or purple leaves with a purple stem.
  • Why it’s special: Its color resembles Lord Krishna’s divine complexion, making it especially beloved in Krishna worship.

Where to Place a Tulasi Plant at Home?

According to Vastu and traditional beliefs, the placement of the Tulasi plant is crucial for inviting positive energy:

Ideal Directions:

  • East (most auspicious)
  • North or North-East (also highly recommended)
  • Centre (optional but allowed with good sunlight)

🌞 Additional Guidelines:

  • Ensure ample sunlight.
  • Keep Tulasi plants in odd numbers – 1, 3, or 5.
  • Surround with flowering plants for enhanced spiritual effect.
  • Keep the area clean and avoid placing:
    • Shoes
    • Brooms
    • Dustbins
  • Do not keep dry or dead Tulasi plants indoors, as they attract negative energies.
